Hey captbill, i just purchased mine today. I know it takes a while for it to break in. I was wondering what water level I should keep it at? For th break in period, should I leave the water level in the skimmer body as low and possible and adjust it after the break in period? Or should I up the water level just endough so that the bubbles are forming at the lower level of the collection cup neck without any spill of water and foam into the collection cup? Let me know. Greatl appreciated. Thanks!

pump making a lot of noise

Did you ever have a problem with the pump for the Marineland Pro Protein skimmer? Mine was working really nicely but now the pump is making this really irritating noise! I cleaned the pump by taking it apart as much as I could but the noise still didn't stop. The skimming is fine and the bubbles are forming great too but I dunno what is causing the noise...any idea? I was thinking of running the pump by itself in a mixture of water and vinegar. Since it will be acidic, it might clean out the pump if there is anything inside it.

    That's a good idea.

Have you ruled out cavitation, from the motor not being completely submerged?

Does anyone know how to get the pump mechanism out of the Marineland Pro Protein skimmer? I have tried multiple maneuvers to get it out w/o success. I'd like to take it apart to clean it, as suddenly I have micro-bubble problems after having no problems for 6 months.

    So far not so good

I have had the 100 model running for about two weeks in my 55 g tank.

On the plus side it is quiet and simple.

On the negative side it has not pulled any skim yet.

On the very negative and highly irritating side this skimmmer (unlike my prevous CPR SR2) is extremely sensitive to water level changes in your sump (I am currently at 6"). As little as 1/2 inch change can make an exponentially big difference in the water level in the skimmer thereby affecting its performance. As far as I can see, you will need to have an extremely accurate auto top off system or resign yourself to manually monitor and adjust the sump water level a few times a day. I wish I had known this before I purchased.

I am hopeful that after the 1 month or so break in period others have described here, that I will be getting good skim and less sensitivity to sump water level. Otherwise I will replace the powerhead on my CPR which skimmed quite well, wasn't any near as sensitive to water levels but was a little noisy (which could have been because the powerhead was wearing out and ultimately failed).

If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it.
