The first one. That's the way I'm using them. I just haven't found the prefect placement yet.

Is there a problem with using the second one? The first one seemed too intense.

The first picture is what a powerhead typically looks like. I have noticed that using it as you have in the first pic, I have no dead spots because it covers a greater area. How do you have them placed and pointed?

I have them in each rear corner pointed in top center. I think I might set one up as the first and the other as the second.

Play around with it til you get something that works. I have mine in the middle of the back corner. One pointed at the surface about 6 inches from the side and front, the other pointed at the surface on the front glass about a third of the way across the front. It moves sand some as the cups lose suction and when I press them back on sometimes I accidentally move them. It's a PITA getting them back right. In a 75 though, they give me plenty of movement. I will have to add another soon, as I start to add corals.

FWIW, the #2 option was all they had when I bought mine, and they work. Also, IIRC, the GPH rating is correct with that one; can't remember the exact numbers ATM, but it was insanely higher with the prop (#1). Maybe that will help determine which is best for your tank?

    Just a thought... :)

I think I have no choice and have to do both #2. I have very fine sand because I use to have a stingray so it just shoots all the sand up even if I only have one #1.

Then you probably should use #2 version.
