hey all i just setup a 48" 120 with a single overflow with a Rio 2500 as a return pump my overflow goes up to almost the top of the overflow 90 and then makes a loud sucking noise till it gets down to the two drilled holes at the bottom of the 90. everything under the tank is hard piped with 1" pvc, any ideas? p.s. if i valve my return to about half it runs silent but then i have super low flow and this overflow is rated at 700 gph?

I have a Marineland as well, and I have the same problem. Since I am moving soon anyway, I was thinking of swapping in a durso standpipe when the tank is broken down.

I'm also putting the tank nowhere near my home theatre set up in the new place. Right now it is very close, and the tank makes enough noise that I really have to crank up the volume to enjoy a movie.

I have played with mine a bit, but haven't been able to get it quiet without sacrificing too much flow. I don't think that the people that designed it gave too much thought to making it quiet.

If you come up with a solution, please post it or PM me.

I was over at a friends house that has 4 tanks in one room. The only one that was making noise was the Marineland. They did NOT design their overflow properly. He could make it silent by clamping a length of rigid airline tubing down the drainpipe and dialing back the return pump but then he got low flow as well as having a piece of tubing sticking out the top of his tank.

I think the only way to make it quiet is a Durso or Stockman drainpipe.

Even though you have an integrated overflow and this example is an external overflow box, this might be an easy fix for you.

I have a 1200 gph pump in a 110 gallon tank, and I still get issues with noise. However, if the water level in your overflow box fluctuates, you may need a stronger pump. My water level stays constant, and I still get too much noise.

So, don't expect a stronger pump to fix the noise problem. I think that they just have a poorly designed return stack from the noise perspective.

Silencing the overflow completely is a matter of scientific understanding of the principals involved: the acceleration of gravity, flow resistance, water column height and the effect of creating a siphon

It is completely easy and costs almost nothing. You can nail the water level exactly and never have to adjust anything. This website can show you how, if you can only understand it: www.reefking.com

One less thing that is guessed at in this hobby, one more thing that is known.

yes great info Tom, i however already fixed my problem, what i did was drain the overflow chamber took out both drain and return lines cut both 90s so there just straight pipe from the bulk heads up. i then added a gate valve below the tank on the drain and dialed it in just above the top of the drain line and it holds perfect and super adjustable. the old return line is now just a back up drain line. i forgot who posted this idea on 3reef that i copied but i thank you all very much for your great ideas.
