I've had one for about 7 years, it started out maroon and now it is very dark brown, almost black in appearance and it is quite big now. I've never had any trouble with it as far as other fish or corals go but it does nip me a lot when I'm doing something in the tank.

They are actually really cool fish, but they will get really aggressive toward other tankmates. If it decides to host your LPS, it may end up killing it instead. I had one grow from 1 inch to 3 inches in my 24gallon. It chased away all the fish I had that was a lot smaller than him. I had a nice 2 inch bubble coral. She started hosting and the coral did not like it all. She kept on nudging her head against the meat, which lead to it never opening and death. And they will never let any fish into their territory, well most fish are like that anyways.
I would start with a small one, if you were to get one.

From what I understand, unless you get a mated pair, 2 is not a good idea as they will probably fight.

In a 55g with 2 tangs, I wouldn't put too much more in there. Tangs can get pretty big and the maroon, full grown can get to 7 inches. A pair of percsulas or ocellaris is a very good idea for that size take though.
