When i first got a reef tank i had assumed that the algae i would be scraping off the glass would be some type of green nuisance algae. The amount of time i spend cleaning coralline of the acrylic is crazy. I spend hours, multiple days a week manually scrubbing off the brown spots with a sponge. I have the Kent pro scraper but it doesnt work unless i use the sharp edges, which scratches the acrylic. I tried using my mighty magnets every day, and that did absolutely nothing. It does not keep the spots from forming and isnt strong enough to wash them off. I really cannot see how this coralline is beneficial in any way. To me, it seems like the nuisancest of all the nuisance algaes. Is this something that you all have to deal with as well?

    Brown Spots?
    Can you post a pic?
There are alot of different colors of coralline but i have never personally saw brown.
I cant see it growing a couple times a week either. if i leave my back wall unscrapped i can see little spots starting at about 2-3weeks. Every tanks different though.

I've noticed that it grows thicker on my plastic powerheads than on my glass. It seems to have some sort of affinity to plastic. I'll scrape my walls and see regrowth in about 2 weeks as stated above.

I would like to see pictures too. I had a few brown circles pop up, but I didn't consider them corraline.

They start as a group of small brown spots that grow overnight. If I don't scrub them off, then they will turn into one large pink spot. At that point, they are almost impossible to remove without scratching the tank, so I try to get them in their early brown stage.

It's definitely coralline.....of course most hobbyists like myself would love to have an overabundance of it. My first reef tank was a 75 acrylic and that's the downside to acrylic in that removing harder algaes like coralline scratches the tank....you could check your calcium levels and see if it's high and then bring it into check because calcium can fuel coralline. For the most part, a lot of coralline is a good sign in a reef and you may just have to be ok with the aesthetics of it being on your back wall and powerheads and such and focus on trying to clear the front. I don't know of any tool that can scrape coralline without scratching acrylic :(...I wish you could send me some for my tank though. Just my .02 Perhaps someone else can chime in on a safe scraper for coralline...

Guess its kind of like a blessing with a curse.? I'll try letting my calc drop to around 400. Its usually about 420-440
