Well I'm late to the party, not too late tho.

In any case, that system is looking pretty righteous Matt. Well done! It's clean and compact. Being a new yorker, I can appreciate a tightly built system.

Boy I am very overdue for one, eh?
    :p

My life recently went insane with a new day gig, car troubles, boat troubles, this crazy site, family news .... LIFE. I'm just trying to ride the wave.

So how is my tank these days? Fair to great.

    What is great?

My SPS... this tank is an SPS farm... once I got the my water balanced with ESV, my montipora really started going. A new birds nest is fuzzy as heck too. And a new acropora I picked up from BAYMAC is growing. So I am psyched about that.

A deresa clam that someone gave to me is loving it too.

A Neo Nano is darn shallow (<12 inches from surface to sand) and if you put a 150w halide over it - those things above do great.

But the above is also the challenge/drawback in a way as I am fighting algae in a bad way since I have been feeding my fish every day.

It started with cyano, but I expected that with a new tank, that has come and gone, and come again.

    UV UPDATE

[BY THE WAY - my tank cycled twice - once the normal way, and then again when I had my UV burn due to new bulb and finding out that my UV shield was actually just a 'splash guard.' - Update on this, I lost my frags directly under my pendant. A digitata, birds nest (diff ones than I have now) and an acan. My favia is still in there but has never really recovered). Bacteria and pods got zapped - all algae gone - started cycle all over again - now all are back.

What recovered: corals on edge of tank including a bubble coral (although temperamental), zoas, a fungia that I was sure was dead (looking better than ever now). And my clam. It looked like it got hit in the mouth. I didn't think it would make it. It did and is fully recovered - took about a month... My coral beauty - lost its top fin almost completely - now fully recovered. I thought it would die. The UV thing was very traumatic. I am going to start a UV awareness month to help others avoid this soon. No joke.]

    What is fair/bad...

Various fuzzy, filament type algae, hair algae.. is starting to get a foothold in the tank. Not sure if this is just the grand finale of a cycle or a sign of some serious problems. With shallow tank, halide and feeding I am not too surprised but I still wonder. My refugium is taking off, I am curious if it will start edging out what is going on in the tank.

No doubt some of this is due to my slowing up of water changes. I was doing it once a week (5 gallons) while I worked from home. But now that I am currently gone 12 hours a day I am having a hard time doing any. I did one last week and it was my first in 2-3 weeks. I think I am asking for it. I need to step it up this weekend.

I got a bunch of snails recently and I am thinking about a pincushion urchin to help. But the urchin is a mixed blessing if your corals are not glued down. hmmm

Anyway, that is my update... now I have to hit the bed. I hope to have updated pics taken this long weekend.

Thanks ardo! This tank seems to demand SPS, it is too shallow for anything else with a halide.

Thank you sir! I love the tank.

Not the best pics but you get the idea..

Corals are going well, especially SPS. My fungia is looking much better now. I am happy about that.

The fish are pigs - my mysis routine has me dealing with some nasty algae on some of the rocks - but I am dealing with it - I went out and bought a ten gallon tank for water changes and did 10 gallons yesterday.

I ordered a new phosban reactor and a phosphates test kit as I think my feeding is a bit much even at once a day. I plan on doing more 10 gallon water changes - once a week at least until I get a foothold on the algae.

I also am getting a tuxedo urchin. Snails are not keeping up.

My water parameters have been great since I started using ESV two part.

This tank is not that old (started end of Feb) but I think I am turning a corner. (I hope! :) )
