I wouldn't bother putting the sand and rocks in for the freshwater leak test, it'll just make things messier.

But another tip once you're ready to do all that: add rocks first, then sand, then water. I put bubble wrap on top of the sand and gently poured the water onto that to reduce the sand storm. It worked very well for me my tank was clear the next day.

Another filling tip. When I filled mine, I actually used my skimmer pump to transfer the water from the buckets to the tank. i used the pump with a piece of hose, and directed the flow onto the highest rock. It flowed down the rock and created almost no disturbance whatsoever. Tank was clear 2 hrs after filling.

Okay so o am leak testing it and everything seems good, except a couple things. First is I am not happy with the return pump. Seems like its not pushing that much water, but it could just be me. Second is that the beananimal is noisy so far. I can get it to be quite if I hold the air intake on the secondary pipe and when the water level is low. Once I let it go and the water level rises the overflow becomes noisy

Sounds like the BeanAnimal is working. The quietest setting is where the water level inside of the overflow is at right in between the main and the secondary. You're gonna have to kinda tweak around and let it be for like 10 min or so, and check the valve opening. Literally hair much close/open when I adjust the flow.

What return pump you got? (sorry too lazy to check if you said in a post before ::)) You can always calculate the flow if you measure the height and length from the return to the outlet. I use the RC's headloss calculator.

Also, did you ever mention what kind of tank you are aiming for? (Mixed reef, fish only, softies with fish, SPS main and whatnot)

Duh, you did say that not too long ago. Sorry.. Zero head 581gph is fine I believe. Since you wanna go mixed reef in the future, 2in10(John)'s tank is 75 gal with 40B sump (water volume is 30 gal), he uses Rio 8HF, @ zero headloss 550gph! I know everyone's setup is different, but just for comparison. You should check out John's thread, if you havent. His tank is what Id like to accomplish.
