    The maxijet in a skimmer configuration has a venturi attachment like found here: Maxijet Turbo Venturi Kit: Premium Aquatics

    that mixes air and water and is much louder than a standard powerhead.
    You can make a muffler that helps a little but it is still going to be quite loud due to the way it is designed. For a muffler take a 35mm film can andstuff some cotton balls or filter floss inside then drill a hole in the bottom or lid so the air line will fit through the hole, this silences the intake.
