    Hello All,

I have a Red Sea Max 130 (orig) 34gallon - my powerheads keep going out on me. I replaced one of the stock powerheads with a maxi jet 900 (236gph)- this thing really kicks and produces a very nice current in the water. My concern is that it might be too much.

The stock configuration comes with two directional powerheads on the left side of the tank and I added Korialia nano to the right side of the tank.

Is there harm to an all-fish tank if the current is too high?

fish love currents its really hard to have too much depending on the species of fish (i have heard cardinals dont like a lot of flow all the time)since the ocean is filled with strong currents . if kicking up sand is a problem play with the direction and if its still too much add courser sand in the areas being impacted by flow .Really its all depended on species of animals

For most tanks not by a long shot. I have well over 5 times that amount of flow in my 30 gallon tank. But like bio said it depends what you're keeping, some animals don't do well with high flow. What do you have in the tank?

I have about 3,500 gph of flow in my 75. The fish and corals love it. I see my clown and wrasse, and especially my anthias playing in the currents all the time.

all I can do is add to whats been said above

when you 1st upgrade, add more flow, there can be a small period of adjustment for your fish, but once adjusted IME , the fish appreciate it

I have 2 surfing clowns, that enjoy swimming and then getting carried away by the flow from my K clones - I also have a fireball angel that loves to try and peck at the very same power head in the 60 , and gets pushed away repeatedly - great play time for them IMO

Depending on the type of coral specimens it probably is OK.

I have read many posts estimating max circulation of 20-40 times the tank volume per hour to limit detritus build up. So 2600-5200 gph total powerhead flow in your tank can be used.

I have 2 Koralia 3's on a red sea wavemaker, 2 modifed maxijet 900's and a seio prop 1500 pumping flow thru my LR in a 90 gallon mixed reef with good results.

good to know, thanks! I know my fish loved it when I added the Koralia - they swim right up to it and swim in the current.

I'm not having any issues with sand getting kicked up... just blown away in one spot right down to the glass.

Fish wise, I have a blue spotted puffer, longnose hawkfish, clown fish, damsel, blenny, and the cleaning crew

if your blowing sand then it might be a positioning issue rather than force issue

directed upwards a little to give good surface movement is great
