I'm thinking about getting a Maxima for my 90G reef, but I'm wanting to place it in the sand.

Will the 5 bulb T5 lighting be enough?
ATI bulbs, 2 blue plus and 3 aqua blue specials.

Standard 90g dimensions, 2 feet high.

It should be enough light. Maxima clams are rock boring clams and should be placed on rocks for their best health.

I ended up putting it up kind of high...
Like a foot below the light. It's kind of opened a bit already.

    I figured higher the better

I have a 6 bulb t5 and my clam loves it. He is in the sand as well, does it have to be on the rocks?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
2in10 is correct Maxima and Crocea in the wild are both rock boring clams.

A Maxima might do just fine in the sand bed but optimal placement in my experience is within the rock work is you can provide a stable spot.

If you want to place a crocea or maxima on the sand bed, bury a piece of slate or base rock in the sand under it, the abyssal organ will send its foot into the sand and attach to the rock. Its in their biology.

Mine seemed to love the sand bed over the rocks. Think it was the lighting. Kept moving off the rocks at night after I placed him back. Couldn't stay steady(upright) in the sand so I put him on a large frag disk and he glued himself to it.

You need to have a level spot on the rocks for the clam to be happy.
