Don't let me shock you, but I never test ! I do a water change on each of my tanks once a month. When I do that, I do some serious scrubbing & cleaning. I change the filters only once every 3 months. I add calcium & marinvit to my salt water tank once a week & fertilizer my planted tank weekly. I've been doing this for years !

That's it ! My tanks are all healthy. I must just be lucky ! :)

Hi Salty fresh - its always a good idea to have those test kits , even if you only use them when you feel you have a problem, many people may do some tests regular and some tests when a need arises for example - you get algae and find you have PO4
if you test regular, you may have been able to ID PO4 and take preventative steps before the algae became apparent

in addition, I hope you never have to post a problem on this site, but if you do, then people will ask you about tank conditions in order they can make recomendations

so as said at the start having those test kits is a good idea

I do have a test kit. I may just test my 3 tanks today. The problem with me is, if I find something wrong, I wouldn't know what to do about it. I suppose that is where the group will come in handy. Thanks for the advice. If I don't know the problem, how can I ask for advice. Good point !

    Hi Salty fresh

for saltwater its best to have at least, PH, DKH, Amonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and Phosphate
Copper is a handy one to have just in case ( myterious invert deaths, snails etc and coral decline)

the further you get into the hobby then you may want to consider ir if you keep SPS will need, Calcium, Magnesium and a host of others I as far have not experienced ( no SPS or anything above begginer/ intermediate for me)

If I missed any obvious ones, please let me know

I don't have a test kit for my fresh water tank, but I am going to test my salt water right now. I'll be expecting some help if something is out of wack. :))

Please also look @ my post on algae. I have googled it some, but still need help.

    Thanks.
