When i first started my 60 Gallon tank I had but a mechanical filter on it. Now I have about 60-70 lbs of live rock in it and have three fish. Do I need to keep that filter on it. I will be installing a sump/refugium in a week or so.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
No you do not need a filter. The draw back is that you do not have any mechanical filtration sponge/floss to remove suspended particles.

    Do you have an overflow?
    Do you have a skimmer?

For my sump/fuge I have an eshops overflow that has two drains that will run into my fuge/sump where I will have a skimmer setup.

With a skimmer and that much live rock the only advantage really is the removal of suspended particles by the mechanical filter.

The skimmer will remove the DOC and the rock and substrate works as the biological filter. This type of system is called a Berlin system, very efficient as long as you use RO/DI water only do not over feed.

Looks into using a sock on the over flow plumbing to remove suspended particles.
