Mechanical Filtration Necessary?

has anyone here ever run a tank that runs purely on bilogical filtration?

really? how did you manage to pull it off?

 

My 12 gallon nano cube had no mechanical filtration only live rock and a clean up crew....

 

thats wild how big is your cleanup crew?

 

I do! that's the only filtration i would use with excellent results,
every now and again i use chemi pure but that is it, I guess you would call that chemical then eh!?!

 

do you guys have normal or ridiculously large cleanup crews?

 

I still run a system like that . Define what you consider mechanical filtration ? I ran what was called a Berlin bar bottom just rock and a skimmer and I had a natural system about 1970 sand water some rocks and 3 air stones , I ran a few plenum systems with and with out a refugium and a small skimmer and I have run a few DSB also . But the term Mechanical is vague at best as is most hobby terminology All I use now for what I guess you would call mechanical is a little carbon in a box the skimmer outlet runs through and a refugium and rocks .

 

all I have for now is one peppermint shrimp

 

I have some snails and very few if any hermits I really don't like or trust them ,
