Hey 3reef :) Right now I have a medium sized melanaris wrasse in my 75G reef and lately hes been nipping at the fins of my tang and anthias and scaring the pencil wrasse into hiding. Hes also been snacking on every medium-small sized snail in the system, this is a big issue for my tank because I run a 4 inch deep sand bed that requires nassa snails to thrive, which would eat up the service debris. Hes an awesome looking fish and Id love to keep him, but hes just disrupting the peace in my tank. Iv been debating as to what I plan to do with him, and came up with the idea to donate him to my local aquarium for now charge. I thought it would be nice to know where he is going and maybe see him when ever I visit. However the only tank that could best accommodate him is home to 2 huge yellow tangs, a nice big hippo tang and an indian trigger, would they cause any problems for him? thanks!:)

Well, I have a carpenter's flasher Wrasse with the Melenarous. ( flashers are about the same so I would say both are compatible from experience)

If I was going to say from a hunch.. I think all reef safe wrasses would be compatible.. But dont quote me on that yet LOL

Evolved might chime in later :p he is the Master in chief when wrasses are involved LOL

If we are talking about halichoeres melanurus, it always amazes me how different individual fish of the same species can be. My melanurus is at the bottom of the pecking order in my tank. I have never seen him be aggressive with any of the other fish. I have two tangs (powder blue and desjardini) and they barely pay any attention to the melanurus except to run him out of their way once in a while. I have never had a trigger so can't comment on how they would get along.

Same here. Although It was a little territorial when I added my anthias. But nothing too bad.

I will add that my wrasse was one of the last added so that makes a difference.

Indeed; YMMV with any given species. There's always exceptions from the perceived norm.

I don't see a few tangs and a trigger presenting any problems for this one.

I will say, the behavior you've described isn't atypical for a melanurus which is underfed; if you are not feeding him 2-3 times per day you may want to consider increasing feedings to see if this behavior subsides.
