I'm thinking about putting a male in my fish-less 30 gallon or possibly a male and female. Any thoughts?

Do it! They're awesome when they mature and get their good coloration. Kind of bland when they're juvi's though. Many people say they're not reef safe. But I have had zero problems with mine. It has left my peppermint and coral banded shrimp alone.

Edit: I'm not sure about two of them though. I think mine is almost too big for my 40B.

I had a single melanurus for a little while. I also felt that my 46 bow was a bit small for him. He was pretty much reed safe, their only a caution with inverts. The worst that he did was pick up a few ceriths shake them around and toss them around the tank, but that's it, and he was good with everything else

They'll actually remove quite a few pests. Pyramidal snails, bristle worms..stuff like that.

I've got one in my 90g. They get to be 5-7", depending on who you ask. It might be a bit tight in your 30g once they reach adulthood. At the least I wouldn't get two.

Beautiful fish! Will definitely outgrow your 30 when it reaches adult size.
