    I purchased both of these 3M materials the other day hoping to mod the impeller on my ASM G-1 pump. Do you think it's safe to use?

    They're "Scotch Brite" pads, and it's up to you I guess... I wouldn't.

    What I know about them is that they're made with polymers and silicon carbide grit - they're VERY abrasive and will scratch glass and plastic.

    I suspect they're also colored with some kind of dye/paint. I have had the color bleed when they're used wet, but not all colors do that. It's possible it's just a colored plastic base and the natural wearing down leads to a powder fine gunk that bleeds out... I'm not sure.


    Anyways, I would say no, but only because I'm not certain they're safe. Maybe you can soak a pad in a small container of tank water for a day or two and test the water. My main concerns would be silica, phosphates, and dyes.

    Ummmm....Scotch Brite? I don't know about that...but anyhow, I used neither...got some gutter guard instead
