So i am going to be upgrading from a 20 high to at least a 40 gallon tank. Gonna be building the stand this weekend. I have been doing a lot of research and from what i have found, this hailde seems to be the best option for me:

    150W Metal Halide Pendant Lights

what do you think? it seems to be the cheapest halide out there/for the quality it will offer.

I have heard great reviews of the fixture. You will want to replace the bulb when you can afford it. Ushio & Phoenix I know are good brand bulbs.

    I am looking at getting the 250 of this one if I can't find a 2x 250w used(for my 75g).

think 150w will work good on a 36" tank???

and if its not enough light, i can eventually just supplement it with maybe T-5 HO retrofit kits enetually or somethin (cause they are so cheap and im a broke college student).

Yeah, you're good. Be sure to slowly acclimate new corals to prevent bleaching. That's plenty of light.

how often do you have to replace metal halide bulbs, every 6 months? and also has anyone heard how hot this fixture/ballast gets?
