so my tank is 36" long, and I would like to get a 24" metal halide lighting system, I know there will be a 6" clearence of "no light" but would this be OK?

yes! mh are very strong lights!!! the whole tank does not need to be covered with light. the mh will expand and cover the whole tank! put the light in the direct middle and you will be fine. how many watts is it?
