i am wanting to add a metal halide to my system. i have a 75gal reef setup with 4 t-5HO that put out about 85wt each. i was going to add a 250w mh to the system on top of what i have. is that to much and is there a such thing? and is there a such thing as house metal halides and aquarium metal halides. if they are all 250w with a 20k bulb setups does it matter. i dont know and i see tons of diff kinds and i am going to retro fit the whole setup any ways so i was going to piece it together. please let me know your thoughts. thanks

Where did you see residential 250W 20k bulbs?

Don't know about MH but I have seen residential T5s....but they are the wrong temp. I would imagine the same is seen for MH. You can pretty much retro anything in your hood. You could do a 250W on one side with actinics surrounding and a retro T5 array on the other. I have seen that done. You imagination is the limit here.

To be honest, very few of the aquarium bulbs are made for aquarium usuage, to small of a market. But the 20,000k bulbs are not found in HD or your local lighting company.

Now on the ballast, most house MH setups are normal pulse start M58 ballasts, and they are the same as the magnetic 250 watt pulse start ballasts used in the hobby.

I'm sorry but I really have to chime in on this one... HUH??????? So your telling me, UVL, Ushio, Giesmann, XM, Hamilton, Blue Life SPS, Iwasaki, and Current to name a few are made for household/factory/whatever use?? I don't think so..... And to say this hobby has a small market actually makes me giggle. Look at how many componies are out there selling aquarium related supplies! I don't know where your getting your info from but you should check it twice before stating..

I hate to break it it to you, but very few of our bulbs are made just for us by aquarium companies. Our market is very small compared to hydroponics, stadium lighting, warehouse lighting, etc. I do not know the numbers and I doubt that anybody has exact numbers but our hobby does not make a dent in what a lighting manufacture does. Ushio makes millions of bulbs but how many are sold for aquariums. When you look at ushios site, the pet market is so small, that they have not made the time to make a catalog of PET products.

We are a very small market.

    Here is what Ushio says.

Audio/Visual, Photographic View Product Catalog View Product Spec. Sheets

Notice it says pet products, and no available catalog at this time. They have spec sheets for a few bulbs. Now compare that to the number of other bulbs they make, and you tell me how large the pet products line is to the company.

There is a big difference between making a product specific to aquarium usage, and marketing a product for aquarium usage.
