so i got my spectrapure RODI and i'm super stoked to set the thing up. however, all the plumbing under my sink (where i'm going to hook up the unit) is metal piping. i'm more or less certain that the braided bits are steel but the shut off valve is brass (reef no-no). my question is does this matter? if the water is moving through the valve and not in constant contact am i still risking my corals or is it nominal enough that i don't need to worry about it
    thanks for the help

If all of this is before the RO/DI unit I wouldn't see a problem. May be wrong though..

I agree, that's what an RO/DI unit does.

all i know about rodi is that it make water "gooder"

well i'm off to Homie D's to pick up some parts so i can play plumber. if anyone wants to chime in and tell me i'm making a huge mistake, you have about an hour to do so.

Nope, you doing just fine. most home plumbing is copper, mine is all copper. This is what you using a RODI unit for is to remove all the impurities from the water, metal, phosphates, chlorine and other chemicals.

Gazog and the other are correct. We have no control over what our water travels through on its way to our sink. The copper shut off valve may be the only copper item, or may be the last copper item in a long line of copper piping leading up to your house, or from your home's water main to your sink.

In either case, the RO/DI is what we buy to remove this copper and dozens of other things we don't want in our reef tank. You'll be fine.

As long as its before the RO is fine.
There are valves that make the installation very simple without cutting anything. HD or Lowes should have a tee type valve that screws into place between the wall valve and the braided line which has a tee configuration and valve to feed the RO/DI unit. Easy to install and can be remove later with nor permanent damage to the plumbing unlike the self tapping valves and other methods.
If you are going to install it permanent with the waste line going in to the drain, make sure you install the drain tee on the sink side of the P trap not the sewer side which is a potential cross connection between potable and non potable water.

Do you know what your tap water TDS is? Its possible but not probable the IN and OUT probes could both read 0 if you have very low tap TDS. You are reading RO only TDS and RO/DI of finished water TDS not tap.

Have you ran it enough to flush the system yet then measured your waste ratio and trimmed the flow restrictor? What is your pressure gauge reading and what is your water temperature? Its most likely a 90 GPD unit but actual GPD varies depending on the temp, psi, incoming TDS and how much you are sending to waste.
