Hey yall! its starting to get pretty warm outside and without air conditioning i am finding out that my tanks are heating up quite a bit when the lights are on! I have my MH about six inches from my waters surface, i have lots of good flow in my tanks. i was wondering if raising the Lights up a bit to like 8-10 inches from the water would be a good idea? Also when i raise the lights are the corals going to be angry or will it even matter?
    thanks[IMG]

6" seems pretty low for a metal halide. How many watts is it? I would go a minimum of 8" above the water, so yes I would suggest raising it would be a good idea.

Do you have fans blowing across the water? If not, this will help.

Is the tank open top or do you have a lid over it? Do you also have a canopy? I would suggest having it be an open back. You could also put 4" fans on each end & add air exchange vents(like people use in ac for the houses) in the top.(sense heat rises)

i had this problem aswell, i wired a little square computer fan to a matching dc converter and then hooked it up to the same timer as my halides, so anytime the halides are on the little fan is blowing the heat out from between the water surface and the fixture. i also run an open top and since its a little square fan it is not an eye soar. i also installed a clip on fan to blow across my sump, this fan is only on during the hottest time of the day then turns back off which cuts back on evaporation.
