    I had eggcrate over my tank at about the same distance for a while (250W bulbs) and had no issues. It got warm, but not too warm to touch. Since the eggcrate I bought some of that exact mesh off ebay and made my own screen tops. The really big advantage with the screen is it does not cut down the light like the eggcrate does. The crate shades your tank a lot.
