I was wondering what I could to to get rid of the small air bubbles that the protein skimmer creates which end up coming out into the tank? Its pretty unsightly IMO.
The skimmer is in the sump.

I don't know how your sump is designed so post a picture of your sump, then we can see whats causing the problem.

Typically there is enough space or bubble trap baffles between the skimmer chamber and the return pump chamber for all the bubbles to escape before hitting the return pump.

Some use a sponge in between to trap the bubbles. My skimmer makes a lot of microbubbles but my bubble trap baffles are 1" apart so none of the bubbles make it to the return chamber.

Some also use a filter sock with the protein skimmer so reduce bubbles.

if you dont have any baffles in your sump, you could try making an eggcrate / pad filter wall that will allow water to pass and most of the bubbles to stay on the skimmer side of the wall. also you could try attaching filter pad or sponge to the output of the skimmer, just make sure you dont restrict the flow too much.

Well I broke my digital camera a few weeks ago and havent gotten it fixed yet so I cant post a pic. But I think I will put the filter sponge on the output and if that doesnt work I'll try the eggcrate method and go from there.
    Thx

I had the same problem. I put a filter sock at the output of the skimmer. Solved the problem. Just have to change it out twice weekly or it becomes a nitrate factory.

can you re-route the exit of the skimmer to the farthest point from the pump going to your tank? if not a filter sock would be the way to go, a sponge would not be a good idea for alot of reasons.

pharmrjohn said to clean it twice a week. It will hold alot of waste so cleaning will be necessary.

I just bought some sponge filters. Whats wrong with them? Would they still be a problem if I changed them twice a week?

Well i think that whats being said is that a filter sock would be better but you can use the sponge just clean it twice weekly.
