I've used mag's before just never noticed the heat transfer I guess. Probably because I wasn't in a situation were the temp is probed and no heater running. I was "warned" that the 12 would heat things up and guess I was a little suprised. Actually I wouldn't even need to run any heater. LOL Wasn't trashing them just making a comment.

No it's cool... like I said it is a pretty common thing to hear about Mags. They are solid pumps. There are better, but those are not cheap. A Ehiem 1262 cost $190. Ouch.

I was just taking the opportunity to point out "what is heard" on the net is not necessarily supported by the numbers.

Now it is important if you are borderline in need of a chiller. I mean you really want to cut down on as much pump heat as possible... use efficient pumps, use a needle wheel over a spray or becket skimmer, use one bigger pump over 3 smaller ones if possible.... stuff like that. I did a lot to cut down on my power consumption... ditched the chiller and the rest was handled by a $10 walmart clip on fan.

Right now you have enough left over to run a media reactor if you want and then the 12 would not be so bad at all.

Oh ya... and you bring up a very good point too.... if you are running a heater... then there is no bad pump. You still need a heat input and the Mag is just helping. I mean an efficient pump and a 100w heater and a mag and no heater is the same thing. Not the same but you get the point. Some folks just don't need the heat and that's different.

^^Exactly what I did while I had the plumbing torn apart. I have a BRS reactor I won at MACNA last year and put it to use..finally. Works out great. :)
