You know me, I love to share....so,

….I got a mystery on my hands.

First, I have a 3” hermit crab in my tank that loves to redecorate for me. He flipped over my bubble which is so sad looking now, I’ll attach a pic. I leave for Hawaii tomorrow morning so I’ll post an updated pic in a couple of weeks when I return.

The hermit is always digging and unearthing things, today I also found a some zoe’s he pulled out – you can see the sand on one polyp in the picture. I have no idea where he pulled this from. It has been growing on a snails shell – must have been buried deep from my sight.

Then they mystery polyps. He dug out a small cluster of polyps – No rock or base, just a 360 degree mass of polyps. I grabbed some crazy glue and attached it to keep an eye on them to see what it is – any up front guesses? If they do not open today I will not be back to check until 2 more weeks….but I’ll update you all for sure !

The polyps look like a zoanthid or palythoa. They will take a little while longer to recover from being buried. They look pretty healthy to me.

The middle picture is of common button paly's.

They are really hardy and if they are open even that much, IMO, when you come back from Hawaii - you will have a healthy colony that has already permanently attached itself to LR.

I agree with the palythoa, I have a colony in my tank so that does not come as a surprise. The closed up polyps I really don't know what they are. We did see them once before but the hermit pulled it back under the reef - this was months and months ago. So its hardy, whatever it is. My guess is Xenia, I do not have any in my tank but I wouldn't be surprised - that stuff is hardy beyond words....Lurking beneath - xenia waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting reef !
