I've kept mantis in my display tanks and fish in my mantis tanks. I've never lost a fish to a mantis. I have however lost many fish to a hitchhiker Eriphia sebana http://www.yafish.com/data/UploadFiles_9962/200809/2008091105114458.jpg (which I called the red-eyed crab from heck). When I first saw this guy I was putting a new coral in my tank and I saw a small dime-sized crab run off. I figured, well big deal, it's tiny what can it do. Well, what it can do is GROW!!! This guy got big and mean and aggressive.

I also had a customer who repeatedly told me that each fish he bought from me died. I didn't understand because I personally QT'd these fish, knew they were disease-free and ate well. I asked him to bring me some water so I could run some tests that I knew he didn't have at home. When I was doing the water tests, their 8 year old boy said, "How come when fish die, they break in half a lot of the time and then disappear?" I was laughing and said, "Fish don't break in half when they die". He insisted, "Oh yes they do. Half of the new fish we bought from you broke in half and by the time I got out the fish net, both halves were gone so there was no body to even scoop out". Well, this obviously had me curious and they only lived about 2 miles from the fish store so I went over there with some silversides. After about 5 minutes, a huge stone crab popped out of the rock work and started grabbing the silversides. Once we trapped this crab, they had no more fish losses.

Were they all smasher types? If so, then it's not a huge shocker.

If they were spearers, could you please send some luck to my address via FedEx Overnight ASAP? ;D

I would think a pistol shrimp wouldn't be catching fish too often, unless it's a tiny firefish and a giant pistol shrimp.
