I recently got a pearly jawfish. He has been in the tank for about a week now. For the first 3 days I had him, he made several burrows around various locations in my tank. I could always see him poking his head out. For the past 2 days I have been unable to locate him. Even during feeding times he is no-where to be seen. Is this normal? Did he possible make a burrow behind a rock that I can't see? I would hate to start taking apart live rock in search for him(to remove a corpse if he died, or to just make sure he is alive). I hate having this unknown feeling. I keep thinking he could've jumped out somewhere and my cat got him . Anyone have experience on these fish and their behaviors?

I had a jawfish that lived under a rock and I rarely saw him (sometimes only like once a month). I thought mine was missing too but eventually, he showed himself.

Thanks, I will keep my fingers crossed and the rock in place(for now). I have been itching to rearrange things but didnt want to stress him out by moving his borrow(whereever that is now). I just didn't want to leave a decaying fish in there either. As I have recently had a nitrate spike up to 20ppm :(

ah hes gone. Did a 30% water change and rearranged all the rock looking for him. Either he jumped and my cat left no evidence... or he was the only one taken in the fish rapture

Yeah, It was a gamble removing the hood. Better lighting vs fish jumping...
Well at least I have learned three things:
    1) Don't have splashing in DT to cause hood corrosion resulting in light loss
    2) Don't just remove said hood without having a alternate cover ready to go.
    3) Doesn't matter how short a period of time, the fish can and will jump when you aren't there :/

The only thing wrong with making mistakes is if you don't learn from them. Sounds like you have your head on straight. Lesson learned.
