I bought a small green sea urchin on Saturday and since Sunday, I have not seen him AT ALL. That's 3 whole days. I know he is new and urshins like to hide and come out at night, but trust me, I have gotten up all hours of the night with a flashlight. I have moved a large rock covering one of the only 2 caves he might have been hiding in with no avail.

I have LOTS of LR in my 75g. If this thing dies in the tank will it kill off everything? I have experience from the past to know that 3 days with no appearance means something is wrong.

Just give it a few days to get used to its new home.
How long did you acclimate it for?

Acclimated for about 45 minutes. He looked fine on Saturday. I think this darn urchin is working for Osama Bin Laden.

drip acclimation is best for them, hopefully that was the case...

they like to hide in crevices so just wait it out. in a mature system a death shouldn't be too much of a problem but test for parameter changes anyway

    ?

What is drip acclimation? I just let the bag sit in there, took some water out, put some tank water in...on and on. Is that drip method?

I think my tank could handle a crash like that. But I was thinking, if it WAS the crab who killed him then wouldn't there be goo and yucky stuff in the water? Would my whole room smell gross if the urchin died or no different than a fish?

    Yea

But with all the hype about urchins excreting toxins when they die I find it hard to believe they can just wither away under a rock and not affect the tank. I am almost ready to pull apart all the aqua-scaping and up-root massive amounts of decaying matter and chaos in order to FIND this guy.

    But I don't want to...lol

AND....BTW...when I owned my last urchin he was anything but slow and timid. He was chuggin around the tank 24/7. I realize that it is easier for a small short-spiner to hide than a long-spine, but this is ridiculous....and why in the WORLD would he die? What is wrong with my tank where both myself and the resident fish do not see a problem?

strange how yours has been hiding, i know i got my blue tuxedo 3 days ago and has been out about eating at the algae on all hours, i didn't drip acclimate him, but i know what i did was just every 5 minutes for half an hour pour a little water in the bag. Maybe your's is still adjusting or found a spot that has algae some where in the crevices of the rocks. Hope you find him
