You are right about the toxins, carbon does remove them. You should be ok if you run carbon, have good flow and keep the leathers down current from the acros.

Common sense when setting up equipment with a thought to your future stock choices goes a long way :)
I don't have or plan to run any leathers in the current tank, but I am keeping a mixture of SPS, LPS and softies/zoas. SPS tanks can be beautiful but something about the mixture of corals just has an amazing visual appeal.

Agreed. You got have the wavy stuff with the pretty rock looking stuff, as my mom would say :D She originally wanted only "wavy things" in the tank. I guess the coral addiction got the better of her.

I had originally intended on keeping mostly LPS with a few choice softies and SPS, and now my tank is being over run with these damn pretty colorful sticks

My experience with SPS is limited and I do have a tank with mostly softies and LPS

I run carbon 24/7 and also Purigen

my biggest issue thus far has been flow ! I have 5 outputs in my 5ft tank and an overall flow of 40+ times per hour

it has taken me multiple attempts at re adjusting things to get adequate flow for my Acros ( so stuff floating about never settled on them) whilst at same time providing more sheltered areas for my LPS and softies, so they dont get blasted off their rocks

its a balancing act in a mixed reef IME

Anyway, it sounds like mixed reefs are doable if you are careful.? Keep in mind that the guy who gave me the no mixed reef advice is the very same guy who told me that no matter what people tell you you've just got to try it yourself.
