I am setting up my 240 gal. FOWLR tank and getting ready to transfer over live rock, fish, and water from my existing 76 gal. I decided to mix my fresh saltwater in the tank. I used the Seachem Salinity salt which I have been very helpful with for the past few years. I mixed the salt in on Wednseday and reached a salinity level 0f 1.025. For flow in the tank to help mix the salt , I dropped in a Ehiem compact 5000 and fired up my Vortech MP40. At this point the water is still very cloudy. I was planning on doing my big transfer tomorrow, but would like this to clear up first. Suggestions?

    Here's my tank thread:

Did you heat and aerate the water before adding the salt? If not, you may have precipitant that's remaining suspended because of the flow.

Also, while it's always tempting to mix in-tank with large systems, I've found it better to mix small amounts in tubs then pump it in.

Iv used a couple bags of salinity and have had some batches stay cloudy for a day or two but never 4. What sg did you mix it to? Maybe it was just a bad batch and one of the components is out of spec and wont stay in solution.

Edit missed the 1.025. Heat it up maybe?

Are you sure it's not from the sand?
I did have Salinity stay cloudy for days as well.

You can try circulating the water through a filter sock if you have one. I always do when mixing since reef crystals tends to leave behind a brown residue.

This happened to me when I did the same with my 250- what kind of sand are you using? I used super fine marco sand (great stuff) but it likes to stay cloudy until it gets all settled . Expect this to last another couple days then resume any time you kick up the sand for the next month or so

Thanks for all of the ideas. I have not added my sand yet. I was going to do that after my rock so that the rock sits flat on the floor of the tank. I think I will try adding a HOB filter to see if it helps.

Unless the water was cold, something is not right. Check Ca Mag and most importantly alk before you do anything. I did the same with my 300 and had clear water in one day using Kent.

IF... All your levels are OK, then it will be OK to go ahead and add......

That said, I would wait unless absolutely necessary. Wait for levels to stabilize.
