My skimmer doesn't skim properly when the water level isn't constant (you've always got to adjust it if water levels change from evaporation), so I was thinking if it was possible to create a chamber in my sump that can maintain a constant water level. This way I can set my skimmer up for one water level & have it work optimally all the time.

Any idea how I'd do that with this sump? Mine is much larger than the one in this picture, but it's the same model as mine.

Or are there types of skimmers out there that are not affected by changing water levels? I'd rather get this type of skimmer or modify my sump than to get an ATO system.

    Any advice is appreciated!

This can be done, but you'll have to either replacement your current sump or add another smaller tank next to the sump. If you have the space in your current sump, you can baffle off a section by placing two pieces of glass/plexiglass at oppisite ends at the height that you need. That section will never drain as long as you seal it correctly. Or buy another small tank and split the drain so one drain will go to the sump and the other drain will go to the skimmer tank. Hope I made sense. Luna

If you have your skimmer in the area between the bio balls and the return pump, all you will have to do is increase the height of the baffle right in front of the pump. But when you do this, you will decrease the amount of water available for evaporation.

If this is a reef tank, I would suggest slowly removing the bioballs, and then putting the skimmer in that old bio ball section. Then you could put a baffle to control the water height either inside the bio ball section, or just after it.
