    NNR = Natural Nitrate Reduction.

    The only way to "fix" it would be to replace the crushed coral with sand. I would do this sooner rather than later and since the tank is new, there is no time like the present :)

    I myself don't like the crushed coral....
    my tank (a used one) came with enough to start the tank but I refuse to use it...the catching of the particles aside it is horrid on the hands, it hurt to scoop it all out and clean it so I can imagine that burrowing fish & such wouldn't like it much and I plan on getting some that burrow.

    Before that experience I was thinking about the crushed coral for my substrate . Now I'm gonna find the softest sand...LOL. I hope the Aragonite sand is nice n gentle on my hands.

    Well, no offense, I am not going to replace 40 pounds of base with all sand either. I guess if it was an issue, someone would have said something about it before. Also, isn't the live rock used for nitrate reduction? I have almost 40 pounds of live rock in a 29 gal. tank...

    Sorry I didn't catch onto the crushed coral thing earlier or would have told you about my experiences with it...don't blame you for not wanting to spend more money on replacing your substrate. 40 lbs of LR sounds like a lot so should help.

    Maybe Tiger for the clown fish...they kinda have the coloring.

    That's what I was going to ask. Because I have thicker sand granules in my 37 and they look like Mary's.

    No worries Mary!!

    Thanks Kacy! :D I'm not too worried about it. I couldn't remember exactly what I got for the bottom of my tank as I am not home to look at the bag... I knew it wasn't exactly crushed coral however. Eric has used the stuff and has had good luck with it so I will let him explain it later :D

    Thanks Eric!!

    Yeah - it's just large sand. And I prefer it! I got the fine stuff in my 90 and it annoys the heck out of me because it's always blowing around and stuff.

    Good info for me I haven't got my sand yet so is good to know what to look for/think about before getting some.

    I know the stuff I'm NOT using IS crushed coral (what came w/my tank) the edges are sharp & the pieces are up to half a cm in size.

    I also know that the 10 gallon tank I have has very fine stuff on it that's easily blown around and the brackish tank, that I just redid the substrate on, now has a coarser sand and doesn't move around as much (but also has less surface area for bacteria to grow than finer stuff). So it's a bit of a balancing act I guess. If you have the right balance with that stuff then I'd be interested in what it is.
