I purchased a cheap LED bar from petsmart to act as a moonlight. Turns out its a bit to bright and you can see it out the hall. It has three blue LEDs and I was wondering if I could use black electrical tape and cover two of them. Will this work or am I just putting the fire department on speed dial so to speak.

I wouldn't try to tape it, it will overheat the light itself as most of the black tape has the actual tape side in "silver" which will reflect all the heat and light back into the light.
I understand your point 100% lol. This is when I tested a 3W moon light on my 24x24x24 cube tank and it is just way too bright.

I'm thinking about trying to take out the bulbs tomorrow, I'll report back then.

On some leds you have a certain resistor to handle the wattage of the power pack vs the forward current, current dissipation and peak current of the led. Trying to remove a lamp *could* cause the others to burn out. Fwiw I'd do the same thing and see what happens just figured I mention that

    Agreed.

Can you post a pic? FWIW, mine are fairly bright, as well. Doesn't seem to affect anything, though. As someone else pointed out to me, they adapt.

I tried the double sided black tape idea and it seems to be working well. I'll have to try it out tonight to be sure. Here's some before and afters.
