What are the benefits of moonlights? Are they needed?

No they aren't needed. I think they are more of a disturbance to the fish than anything.

I think the main benefit of them would be to be an easier transition on the fish from going from bright lights to pitch black. I know some fish will go crazy for a second or two if the lights suddenly turn off. That being said, none of my fish seem to care or notice...

yeah I don't see what it would hurt to run them for an hour after "lights out" but with this being said, you get the same effect from actinics.

I only added them for a bit of night viewing, not for necessity. That being said, my preference is for only a very small amount of light (white for my taste). I see some photos with moonlights that seem to fully light up the tank and that is just way too much IMO. But do what you like, if you have plenty of caves then I'm sure the fish can find a dark place to rest.

Mostly personal preference. I leave mine on all night for occasional viewing (insomniac... lol)- doesn't seem to disturb anything.

the led wave length is so dim that the fish are not bothered by it
thats like saying fish are bothered by the moon which could be possible but its unlikely

it mainly is used for spawning because it mimics a natural light cycle

if you turn these led lights on during the daytime see how you can barely see any light? thats basicly what the fish have to deal with at night essentially

It's one step closer to simulating a natural environment on the reef. I use a moonlight controller that simulates the intensity over the month. Needed? No. Personal preference.

Not needed. Simulate night time for fish and coral. Look cool. That's about it. Unless you're really trying to simulate 24 photo period which in that case should account for sunrise and set.
