I've read people talking about keeping crabs before and the general consensus seems to be that invertebrates don't like nitrates being more than 40ppm

    Hi again guys...

I was asked to post some photos of my aquarium setup which I did last week.

Does anyone now have any comments please now that I've done that?

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy

I'm using an internal filter that consists of a sponge and some sort of media pack.

a sponge? like a cellulose sponge? can you unplug it take it out of the water and take a pic of it? and a pic of the "some sort of media pack" too:) I think that's where your troubles lie. Are you keeping this just a crab tank? I'm thinking crabs eat poop and other wastes, so it doesn't make sense that the nitrates were killing them. To me anyway:confused:

also what kind of food are you feeding and how much/how often?

I'm sorry for not replying. I have very little knowledge of this type of system so any information I could give would be based on a reef tank.

Well there's nothing "biological" about the sponge - it's just a standard sponge that would come with any regular off the shelf filter.

The media bag was also standard and came with the same filter.

There are 2 crabs in the tank and 2 feeder fish.

I generally dry feed the crabs so uneaten food doesn't polute the tank. I give them bloodworms, wafers, shrimp-life stuff, daphnia and crab food (2 varieties)

Not sure if you are still after advice as I've only just noticed this thread.

I've had a rainbow crab for about 5 years now so could give a few tips if you are still having any problems. Theres also some good advice on www.freewebs.com/rainbowcrab if you haven't already seen this.

    Cheers,
    Rob

If i was you buddy, i'd look into a form of denitrafication. Without it no tank escapes nitrates, and most filters (as part of the nitrogen cycle) produce nitrates.

Chuck in some plants, they should gobble up the nitrates and phosphates reducing them to next to nothing.

I would say your concerns are for a different forum.
