My skimmer came with a "Rio" pump installed, and I was curious if going to the next larger Rio would increase efficiency, or would it just push more water through the unit. It is a venturi type, brand "Pro-clear"
I'm running substantial bio load, and was just wondering...:-/

    thnx

Last time I read about Rio pumps it was about getting rid of them. They are low end, unreliable and somtimes a fire hazard. I have no mercy for junk products that not only jeopardizes our expensive reef system but our homes as well :shocked3:

The question is can increasing water movement through a skimmer improve efficiency, not whether or not to use any particular brand of pump. I only mentioned Rios, because they appear to have the same dimensions and footprint from one model to the next, and that is what is running presently. It would seem to be the easiest to fit to the existing skimmer.

To a point yes, the more trips through the skimmer the tank water makes in an hour (given a constant air/ozone injection) then there can be an increase in efficiency seen in the skimmate collected.

However, as you continue to push flow through the skimmer, the contact time (air/water mix with in the skimmer) continues to decrease until you reach a point where it is not sufficient and the collected skimmate begins to decrease.

So, depending on the skimmer, a larger pump will allow you more tuning bandwidth with regard to the air/ozone and GPH ratios provided to the skimmer.

Will you see an increase in efficiency.... maybe.....

Right... dwell time, time air and water has to interact... that's another factor.
    Thanks!
