would not recommend mixing red and purple firefish, when i did that they fought. I do have 3 red firefish that swim in a school but they were introduced together so im not sure about adding one later.

You could give it a shot if you have lots of hiding holes. I have seen both colors in small tanks but I think they were introduced at the same time.

I had three red firefish, all purchased at the same time. One ended up killing the other two. My tank is a 120g with about 60lbs of live rock. These fish don't school, but it may be possible to keep a mated pair.

I also started with three bar gobies. Two ended up becoming a mated pair and ganged up on the third, killing him off. Now the two live happily together.

I'd recommend keeping different species of gobies either singly or in mated pairs.

    I keep:

    1 firefish goby
    2 bar gobies
    1 scissortail goby
    1 yellow watchman goby
    1 yellow clown goby

All of these get along harmoniously.
