Glad to be back on the site :)!! Did not have internet access for over a month and missed you all like crazy!!!
Since I am moving from the Balearian Island of Mallorca to mainland Spain I am looking for advice on how to move my tank and livestock (incl. LR). Any suggestions? The transport by ferry takes about 7 hours plus another 2 hours to get from Barcelona to my new home.
I plan on moving the LR in saltwater from the tank and fish in styrophone (dunno how to spell that but guess you guys know what I mean..) boxes. However, I am wondering about the Sand etc. plus whether I should take some of the water... tank has been cycled for about 11 months now.
Any suggestions are more than appreciated!!
    Hope you are all well!!

    Hey Pelado
I dont think it is possible. The sheer weight may shatter the cage as picked up. If you have enough to pick it up that is. May be possible if you could get it into a large crate to stablize it, but who knows if that is possible.

Why take the risk at that point, just take out the sand too..
I found these links while looking around.
How do you move an aquarium full of fish?

One note, dont feed the fish 24 hours prior, this will help keep the water clean while transporting..

    Good luck

If you are going to move the fish I suggest you get a battery operated air bubbler with alot of extra batteries so there will be enough oxygen for them. Oh yea welcome back. I miss visiting Spain while I was serving in Germany.

Thanks so much for your immediate responses and advice.... I will look at the links and will definitely not move the tank with the sand etc. inside. That would be shipped seperately.

dump the sand. you can get new. keep the rock wet in totes and the fish in an insulated cooler of some sort. FWIW, I transported 150lbs of rock and 2 fish in a 150 gallon rubbermaid tote for 10 hours with no ill effects. just had a bubbler in there and enough water to keep teh rock submerged. the tank was on a trailer behind the truck still on the stand! here is a shot of the whole setup for my 180.

Probably another 2-3 weeks.... oaaaahhh.... I miss my tank!!!! But have to organize the move and will most likely go and get it myself. Foud someone with a truck, so I am planning on going to the island with a ferry (which takes about 7 hours). But wondering whether I should have the fish shipped by airplane (only about 1 hour plus 2 hours travel time to my home).
I intend to take the liverock in styrophome boxes (submerged in water) and about at least 1/3rd of the tank water. My tank has been set up for about 12 months.
Only have two fish left... the b & w clowns.
    I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!

Thanks ya'all. Will have to wait for another month or so, 'cause I have to travel to Brazil for business. I have someone taking good care of the tank but I have not seen it in about 2 months and miss it like crazy.... I will keep you updated.
