I am remodeling the room over from mine, and when completed will be switching bedrooms. I plan to build a new stand for the tank and place both in the new room when completed. My question is: how much weight can the 20 gal tank hold? If i can i wanna drain the water about 1/2 way and just carry the system over with 2 people. Bad idea? I don't wanna crack the tank or blow a seal obviously. The model is Aqueon 20 gal high.

as far as i know the weight ration water to kilo is 1:1 (meaning 1 liter weighs 1 kilo) this said you have to keep in mind your rock work being more dense and heavy. draining it half way and carefully moving it with a few people is the way i would go about it if its from room 2 room. goodluck!!! be careful with tumbeling rocks if they are not glued together, you might want to consider removing the LR and moving just the tank sand and water

    nooooo, drain it.
even 10g of water is still 90 lbs. plus you will still have sand and some rock. the seams could let go/leak if enough water is splashing around in there.

I would remove all the live rock and since you're running BB just drain the whole thing. This way you are not putting any extra pressure on the tank in any place.

should i drain all the water into 5 gal buckets with the LR and then reuse it? and yes it is a bb system which makes this much, much easier.

The rule of thumb is 10 lbs per gallon when you consider substrate, rock, and equipment.

ahh BB makes this a breeze.
if your already draining the water out completely i would save 70-80% or so and fill the rest with new water. might as well make a waterchange part of the move too ;D

thanks guys, i will drain it into clean Rubbermaid containers and reuse most of the water. i will start renovating the room in about 1 or 2 weeks. meanwhile i will be constructing a new stand. I will post pics and keep you all posted when i go for the move in a few weeks.
