im moving to a new location and i need to move my tank with me obviously. my plan of action is to set up a smaller tank with the same water from the show tank and put some live rock in there. then place the fish and inverts in it while im setting up the show tank. my show tank is a 90 us gal so its quite huge.

i was going to keep all the same water and place them in big containers. remove the live rock placing them in some of these containers. i dont know what to do with the sand though. there is about 30 pounds of sand and it cant be kept in the tank when we move it cause its too heavy. should i place it in some of the containers as well?

please help. i have to move it in 2 days time. its short notice i know just something tragic happend where i live and icant live here anymore
    thanks everyone

I read an article just recently (may have been here) about just that--it said to set up the new tank at your new place with new live sand and move every thing else. he said that the sand was too much PITA. I will see if I can find the article.

15 minutes isn't bad. Make sure you have some new water made up, inevitably you will lose some of your original water. Make sure to keep a mop, towels and cleaner with you. You're gonna need them :) + on the use new live sand. Stirring up the old sand and reusing it is not a good idea. I've heard it stirs up the sulfates and puts them into the water. I'm sure there is all kinds of stuff that could harm the inhabitants. You might have a small cycle after you restart. Also, temp acclimate your critters before putting them back in. A short drip acclimate won't hurt either, especially if you need to add more water than a normal water change.

I am doing the same on Monday, moving on short notice.

I am making up almost 30 gallons of new water (I want to make sure I have enough if something should happen.) but am trying to take as much of the old water as I can so I can reuse it.

I am using Styrofoam coolers to transport the live rock in and plastic bags from the LFS for the animals.

Gonna keep them in a 10 gallon while I set their tank back up.

Good luck with the move, I for one am dreading Monday and having to move mine.

I have a thread that I started when I transferred from a 75 to a 90. I was basically a move. Just in-house. My only major mistake was not transferring sand correctly. If I had to do it all over again, I would either wash the sand I had very, very well or buy new aragonite. http://www.3reef.com/forums/show-off-your-fish-tanks/pharmrjohns-90g-thread-52614.html. The first five pages chronicle what I did and in what order. I did leave my fish, inverts and corals in four other tanks. Three tens and one fifteen gallon for five days. That was about the limit. No skimming. No filtration. Just a heater and a powerhead in each. And I didn't feed.

Another thing you can do pretty much right now is a water change and keep that water for later. You will need it.
