I did use the same sand, but did not rinse it since I wanted the bacteria to stay alive. I'm cycling again and my water looks milky as Hell... all I have left are a couple of softies and two clowns that I was able to catch and put in a hospital tank. They're doing soooo much better now... I wish I could have catched the other ones on time... I'll miss my cb, my hippo
and the goby with his sidekick the pistol :'-(

Thanks for the comment about the wife ;-)

Well fellas... my ammonia was @ 8.0 this morning, and I've been making water for a complete wc. I took some pictures of the far too gone coral I could not recover @ all.

Thanks, man. The thing is that I am now debating if I want to start over or put things on hold since this is a temporary home and I am more than likely going to move again in a year when the lease expires. I don't want this to happen to me ever again :-(

Interesting fact... none of the 2 LFS in my area sell RO or salt water. I had to buy the salt mix and wait until my RO unit made enough water to get me started. I can see several things that I did wrong... the main one being scooping all the sand out and putting it back in without rinsing it. The idea of possibly killing the bacteria that takes care of my nitrate killed my tank and I did not realize that nitrates r much easier to control with water changes than the ammonia spike caused by stirring all that sand up. I now added just about 2" of sand... deep sand beds are overrated imo and a pain in the butt if u have to move. Lesson learned.

    Sorry about your losses.
I only have a 1" sand bed on my 46 for that reason and when I get the bigger tank running am going BB till after I move as I plan to buy a house in about a year.

You could do FOWLR till you move.

The only need for a deeper sand bed in the DT is wrasses. You could build up areas to the depth they need and leave the rest of the tank at one inch.
