Gotta agree with AZ here . . . have you really explored all of your options upstairs? Perhaps a cabinet-style piece of furniture next to your DT can be employed to fit a larger/different sump with additional capabilities such as an ATS, ATO, CR, Controller, Skimmer, Reactors, etc, . . . . With some flex pvc you can really get some smooth flow horizontally utilizing a large-radius bend. In this way you can direct your flow from the DT sideways to a "remote" fuge and not have 10'TDH.

Like AZ said, you will be pumping out a lot of cash just to be pumping water from the floor below. It would seem that perhaps a new pump that is quieter may be a better investment. When you are running a big pump at near full blast, you could be paying the cost of the pump on an annual basis just to run it!!! Perhaps investing the same money in a better pump with less TDH may prove to be quiet and installed in a cabinet may prove to provide the room for extra equipment as you desire.

If you said that money was no object and you did not care about efficiency, then some of the large Iwaki or large Reeflo pumps would serve the purpose - but some of them run at 250+ watts - @ roughly $0.12 a kWh you are looking at $250+/year in electric alone for just one pump!

I agree with this 100%. I'm actually in the process of doing just this, I'm building a cabinet to match my stand that will house an ATS, ATO, electrical gear, led drivers, etc. I too was in your situation and got fed up with having no room for equipment under my stand. My ATS will be fed with flex pvc just like ocean man is talking about.

I built the small stand right of my reef to house a chiller and equipment. When I went to LEDs the chiller was no longer needed so it can no house other things like a remote refugium, calcium reactor, ATO or who knows what.

I also built my stand and canopy and built it 6" deeper front to back so I had extra room inside for the sump and equipment plus a 6" shelf in back for things like a closed loop pump, ballasts etc.

Drilling the floor....large external pumps. Yikes.

I'm a huge fan of K.I.S.S.--Keep It Simple Stupid

Unless your floor plan simply didn't allow another square foot of room, I would have to agree with the above posts. Adding on the side just makes more sense to me from a logic/simplistic standpoint.

im actually not too worried about the electric bill...it so high already that it cant get much worse haha! what i am mainly worried about is how loud and cramped my stand is...i have a lot of things i want to add but there is no way i could do them under my stand...

Ihave the same problem with my stand. Is there an adjacent room or closet you could use? Maybe put like a chest against the wall behind the tank and pit the stuff in it?

I looked into doing this a while ago and I had planned on using a small pool pump on a pretty large rubber or plastic container. You have to keep in mind that you will probably not be able to use the sump you have now. In case of a power failure you will have a good amount of water thats going to empty out of your pipes and need a place to go. there is always the option of putting in an overflow drain if you have a drain you can hook into in your basement.

The overflow to a drain though could cause problems with lowering the salinity if the pump shuts off then it dumps water into the drink then kicks back on then the sump may run dry or the ato will top off with fresh water. I would just plan on having enough space for the water to drain back or check valves...but I don't like the idea of trusting them and being the sole thing from flooding my basement.

You def cant trust check valves. The drain is just a back up but you would obviously have to top off with salt water and not fresh
