    Planning is important too!

If you are going to be using the same sand, disturb it as little as possible. i.e. leave the big rocks that are under the sand in place.
Keep an eye on the tempature of all your water. esspically the water conating an organisms.
Have a lot of fresh salt water, and set up as much as possible.
I will let you know more after tommarrow, I am helping my buddy move his tank.

    good luck!!!

Disturbing the sand bed really has a lot to with with how old the system is and how many sand sifting creatures you have, if your sand is constantly stirred all the time, then you have no worries. Depending on the size of your tank, If your tank is less than a year old, and you have a couple sand sifters, I would do want I did with moving the sand. In my 75, I took the first inch of sand and put it in a seperate bucket, with the rest of the sand, I rinsed it out really REALLY good. When you set your tank back up, put the rinsed sand in first, then take the bucket of live sand and put it on top..........VOILA! My tank was about 15 months old and I didnt have a single hickup.

Did you rinse the sand with salt water, or did you rinse with RO / fresh water?

I am only moving about 15 miles away from where I am at the moment.

I think I can do it all in one day given I plan it right. I am planning on using a lot of 5 gallon buckets for my liverock and keep it somewhat in water. Keeping corals in another bucket and I am thinking about leaving the sand in the bottom of the tank.

I plan on saving about 20 gallons of the water in the tank and using freash for the rest.

    Any thoughts?

    TIA

I would save as much of the original water as you can.

How much? I would think you might as well do a water change with the move or am I wrong?

I could keep all of the water if I wanted really just didnt think it would hurt replacing around 50%

when we moved 6 mo ago we had to move a 75g and a 85g both reef tanks. we moved and had setup in less than 4 hours. 3 guys and lots of new salt water at least 50 percent for each tank. better to have more than not enough. we had totes for rocks and 5g jugs for water. dont disturb sand until you have water out. bag your fish and corals for safety. cover your tanks when they go down the road, so debris dont get in. set up tanks and acclimate fish and corals back in. Good luck. K+
