You wont need to cycle it just use some of the old water from the tank you have now when setting it up filtered through a filter sock and you should be fine I did that when i moved from a 50 to 75 and then just added just a couple handfuls of subtrate and lots of new sand it was cloudy for a bit but then went away.

What size tank do you have now? The best bet is to move as much as you can from your current tank. If your adding a significant amount of new base rock & sand into the tank then a portion of a cycle can probably be expected.

Subtrate is your sand or what have you on the bottom of your tank.

Only if it has lots of organic matter on it. Otherwise, no cycle.

ok so to do this right i should move my power heads over to my new tank and just have my filter on my 30g then move my live rock and then seed it for a cycle then move my fish over and filter.
i was going to start with new sand

    does this sound right

I moved from a 28 to my 75 with no cycle. I used the live rock from the 28 bought base rock and new sand. I completed the move in a day by myself. Use saran wrap to make a cover over the sand to prevent the sand from being stirred up. Place your rocks and add your fish and corals. Make plenty of water in advance and keep it heated.

Make sure to double check your heaters to make sure they are in the same temperature range. Mine crashed when I moved from a 75 gallon to a 95 gallon due to overlooking this very important factor.
