So I finally figured out how to fit a complete auto top off system in my tiny apartment!

Got my RO/DI unit on ebay for 95 bucks..100 GPD 6 Stage (pretty good deal I think?)

Goes from there into a 14 gallon holding tank. Float switch hasn't arrived yet so I'll just have to watch the water level for now.

Water comes out of the holding tank down the little black tube from my bathroom to the bedroom to an Aqua Lifter pump hooked up to a float switch in my sump. (I'll tack the tube neatly against the wall later on..)

Currently mixing up my first "homemade" batch of saltwater for a big ol' water change tomorrow! (not real sure why it looks like there's a giant brown blob in there..it's crystal clear!)

Good job! I have that same ro/di. Put the di part(the copper beads looking thing) last or on top. That should be the last thing the water goes through. I can't remember who told me that or why, but.....

    K+ for the diy....I like diy's!

Be very wary of those floating valves. If either float valve sticks you will end up with water everywhere. Awesome set up though Im jealous and dreading my morning top off now.

Yeah i have heard some horror stories..just going to hope for the best! No more hauling gas cans from the fish store..around my building to my door..and up a flight of stairs every week though so the risk is well worth it! I will just have to keep them cleaned off..the one in the sump is the one that concerns me the most just because of the salt and everything

If you can adjust the flow on your RO unit you should experement with it and try to get it as low as possible to keep the system full. This would give you more time to catch any problems.

DI resin is more expensive than RO membranes. Running your water through the RO first, greatly reduces the amount of TDS that is left for your DI resin to deal with, therby extending the life of your expensive resin. Things will work if you keep the DI canister before the RO canisters but it will cost you more over time. This is the same reason that many RO/DI setups have carbon filtration as their first stage or 2. It is cheap media that reduces the burden left for the more expensive stages.
