Anybody have experience moving their tank across country? Were you successful in keeping everything alive?

I apparently will have to move from FL to TN (oh, unhappy days), and I'm not sure how to manage the fish and corals during the move. I'm thinking about just breaking everything down, keeping equipment, and starting over again with a larger tank after the move. I'm quite attached to my clownfish though :-/

Can you leave your clown fish with a friend and have them shipped to you when your move is complete and the tank is set up?

thats alot of work a co-worker moved up from florida to here in indiana and he moved everything up here and then he went back just for his tank. he moved everything even the water. he broke it all down useing totes it was in the summer so he keeped things cool with frozen water bottles and a ac/dc converter for a air pump and a power head. he let his fish ride free in the tote and baged his corals. and put his rock in buckets.he left the sand and alittle water in the tank. he used a van so he could go back and check the temp. and they drove straight threw. he said he didnt loose a thing. well i wish the best for you and your creatures good luck

That's a good idea. I may get a large enough truck and put a rubbermaid container in the back with powerheads / ac converter and do something similar, only in one trip.

I Would try to go ahead and set the tank up and then come back for the livestock in the other tank.

If that was an option, I definitely would do that :( I unfortunately won't have all equipment ready at the time of the move for the larger tank, and will be traveling during the time as well, so breaking down the current tank and setting it back up would be about my only option, other than giving my livestock away to folks who can care for it :(

Try and find out if the local pet shop can fish sit for you till you are ready to have the fish shipped to you in Tennessee!
Also, why are you moving to Tennessee? I love the Orlando, Tampa, Clearwater and St. Pete areas of Florida!!!

i talked to my friend he said one thing he would have done different was filling the tank back up he would have done it slower with air tube hoses i guess he poured it in and clouded it up real bad and he did use some new water and he said he would have put the new in first 25% new then added the old. holding the temp. was a little trickey he said. we both thought it would be eazier trying to keep it warm than cool becouse all you need is a heater. he said it was worth it but would never want to do it again he also said good luck

Thanks man! I appreciate the advice and the input. I will definitely see what I can arrange, either to keep my tank here, or with the LFS, or find the best possible way to move it if I must go.
