So ill be moving later this week and the time has come to break down my tank. since im moving to a smaller place, i do not have room for my 55 gallon. i will be selling it, and i already have a 29gallon build in the works. i plan to sell off my current fish to someone i know instead of my lfs. i do want to keep all my lr though. so i bought a tubberware container, but my question is, do i need to keep a heater and power head in the container with the live rock? i figure the new tank wont be set up for at least a few weeks. probably beginning of sept.. Also, is there any hope to keep my sand? i bought it all live at the time ( im cheap! :cheesy:) so id like to keep it. id also like to keep my invert but i plan to keep them in a 10 gallon till everything is set up. any suggestions, advice, anything at all would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys

Heater and a powerhead are a must to keep everything living live. A skimmer would really help clean out any nasty stuff or die off, or you could just change some water every week. You could just line the bottom of whatever your storing the rock in with the sand, and the inverts could stay in there as well as long as you keep an eye on the parameters.

    if it where me,

as all the fish will be gone, and the inverts will be set up in a 10 gallon

you could move the sand after a good rinsing in your tank water to the tub with the live rock and allow it to mini cycle in there anyway , no harm done - use the Skimmer as Will suggests and the PH and heater - run it like a live stock free tank

when you set new tank up - add it all to the 29 after rinsing it again in the water in the tub - but dont add any livestock until the second mini cycle is over ( it will cycle again when you move sand from tub to tank)

as there will be no higher life forms present - this wont cause you any trouble IMO

its only when people want to move live sand DSB from one tank to another set up and add livestock back on same day that issues can arise

Yeah i actually have a rio nano skimmer hob i plan to use for the transition. would my 300w heater be to much for a 70QT/66L container? Will my chaeto be fine in the 10 gallon with my inverts? i dont want them getting stuck in it and dying or anything. Also, whats a good way to rinse out the sand?

provided its a good quality heater then it will hardly be on anyway, so I believe its not a problem ( if its a dodgy one and sticks your going to cook everything quickly in a small container)

rinsing sand - small QTYS at a time in buckets, used salt water in, swirl it around, pour off and repeat until water runs clear

Chaeto in the 10 gallon - also OK IMO , lots of fuges of 10 gallon with Chaeto in
