Ok so heres the question. I feel stupid using like reef crest because it doesnt utilize the full force of this powerful pump but obviously in theory and with a little common sense, it is more natural (meaning it simulates nature more). But is it truly the way to go or is a constant flow more suitable? With reef crest mode, its barely ever at its fullest potential so, i ask you. Which do you prefer? I mean ya its a cool feature but should i use it?

Again, which do you think will benefit the tank the most. I just cant for the life of me decide which mode. Its probably between reef crest or constant... But it all depends on the poll

One way to look at the reef crest is: why have the pump on only partially most of the time when it can be going full force all the time?? but again, reef crest could be very very beneficial, i just dont know. thats why im asking.

I keep mine on Reef Crest. I played around with it to see what my corals liked. I only get full polyp extension on Reef Crest. That constantly varying current is awesome.

I'm not going to vote on this b/c I have an MP40 and use all of the settings. I like to change it up every week or so. Reef Crest has it's advantages, so do the other settings. As a word of advice, try turning the power up to more then you would normally so that you get more flow for longer and get very high flow for short periods of time.

I use short pulse on my MP40's.. Using this mode I found creates more of a wave then a jet stream of water.. Set your power, then start out with a slow pulse and slowly turn up the pulse rate. You will see the water start to move back and forth in the tank creating a wave.

while you mp people are viewing, any way at all on how to stop the powerhead from stirring up sand? I have it as high as it can go in the tank without drawing in water from the top. I guess i just have to turn down the max? the only bad this is that if i set the max for reef crust so its just too little flow to disturb the sandbed, then when in a low power mode (in random reef crest) there wont be a lot of gph... I love the MP though! love!

Some people have modded the wetside. They put a small piece of plastic on top to keep it from drawing in air. This would allow you to put it higher in the tank.

Search around, you should find pics out there.

i also use reef crest and the corals seem to like it the most it creats more of a random direction flow on the corals after it bounces off of everything you could also use lagoon that will stay up at full power for a little longer but also takes longer to get to full speed about 1 time a week i put it on full speed for a hour of so along with my mp40 to flush any junk out between the rock .

You'll have to turn down the max power if you can't take it up higher in the tank. I have two MP40's in my 120 and I have them at maybe half power. I have also found that in the short pulse mode I don't get the hard constant blowing that moves the sand. It is more of a, well, short pulse of water that is instantly countered by the other MP40 on the other side of the tank. My corals don't like the more constant flow. My bet is even with one like you have you may have luck in short pulse. Very Nice pumps though!!

i have it on short pulse and on the fastest pulse and theres pretty cool waves! The good thing is that the sand, even with it on its highest setting, isnt being disturbed. Any benefits recorded about this one? Is there a way to have a pulse exactly like this but on like a reef crest? Like the powerhead turning on and off but alternating flow rates?

I mean looking at this think, Its pretty vigorous, and alternates so idk
