mud refugium.. Any opinions?

    honestly i used the kitty litter option, way cheaper. I just read not too long ago a thread similar to your topic.

    I used the mud, haven't noticed any significant difference or benefit, if I were to do it again, I would just use sand.

    I was going to use mud under fine sand until I found out that the elements are used up quick in closed systems and you have to buy booster packs once a year or so. I just went with the sand instead.

    Ok. No mud... Kitty litter?? What advantages of kitty litter over dsb?

    The kitty litter actually turns into a fine mud and makes a good home for the anerobic bacteria that will colonize the lower half of the DSB.... and it's cheaper than sand to boot :)

    Have you had experience with the litter? Would you say it is a better fuge substrate than sand?

    I have never used it myself, I spent the money for reef mud before I read about using the litter. I believe Powerman is who I learned about it from.
    The clay in the kitty litter will contain a lot of trace minerals you wont get in plain sand.
