I'm watching Life on the science channel right now and the episode is about the ocean, specifically fish. I was wondering has anybody ever kept a mud skipper in captivity? I know it might not be the prettiest thing to look at but interesting none the less.

I'm a big fan of muddy mud skipper from the Ren and Stimpy days.

    Hahaha...

Back to the fish, there are actually several species, some of which are quite pretty and stay relatively small. The difficult part would be setting up the appropriate environment- they require shallow water with good filtration as well as dry land, as they spend a large part of their time foraging for terrestrial food items. They will also drown if not permitted out of water.

I was this close >< to doing a mudskipper tank, and I'd still love to do one, altho I've done some research.

I'd keep the Indian mudskippers, as they stay relatively small (4") or so, so you don't need a huge setup (supposedly, you can keep up to 6 in a 30 gal). They're brackish fishes, BTW.

Here's a link to a guy who normally has them in stock...you could also pick his brain a bit, I'm sure:

    Frank's Aquarium

I just looked, and he's currently out of stock, which is kinda odd for him, but he pretty much always has them. If nothing else, he has some good/helpful links in the description of the 'skippers.

Do post a build thread if you pull the trigger!
